Initially, Lance and Claire's relationship is almost like a fairy tale, despite the feelings of doom both have stemming from the tragic past that hangs over them. Then Claire's mother dies and she is relieved to have to join the rest of her family in Canada. For, as much as she loves Lance, Claire does not feel ready to get married at seventeen. Lance gives Claire his ring, and she promises to return. But, deep within, she wonders if she really will. Ahead of her lies encounters with Kenn and James that will create further doubts for Claire. Following her mother's death, Claire was forced to join the rest of her family in Toronto, where she also had time to sort out her feelings. There she is very happy living with her sister Liana and her husband Peter. However, her bitchy, jealous sister, Helena who has sponsored Claire into Canada and is technically her legal guardian, uses every opportunity she gets to be cruel to Claire. Helena gives the terms ‘bitch on wheels’ a whole new meaning. Soon, Claire realizes she wants to be with Lance some day, but only when the time is right. But, disturbingly, she begins to experience nightmares of an ancient murder associated with her past life with Lance. After an attack of acute appendicitis, Claire encounters Dr. James Brandon, who saves her life.
