Madison Drake, 9th New Jersey Volunteers, faithfully notes his subsequent experiences at prisons in Richmond, Macon, Savannah, and Charleston. He candidly describes prison treatment, usually cruel and inhuman, but sometimes kind and courteous. He, with other bold men, constantly planned tunnel escapes, and when discovered, still persisted in seeking freedom. The Confederates moved prisoners in late September from Charleston to Columbia, S.C. and thus Drake, with Captain Harry H. Todd, 8th N.J. Volunteers, Captain J.E. Lewis, 11th Conn. Volunteers, Captain Albert Grant, 19th Wisconsin Volunteers escaped from a prison train. He vividly portrays their amazing 47 day journey from near Columbia to safety at Knoxville, Tennessee through swamps, and over snow covered mountains.
