Description:This work covers an area of military history that has not previously been covered by a general work on the subject. It commences with the Honourable East India Company's Bombay Army providing military protection at the trading factories at Canton in 1785 and continues with an account of the First China War which eventually resulted in the acquisition of the Colony of Hong Kong.It deals with the formation of the Hong Kong Garrison and lists the British and Indian army units that formed that early garrison. Events leading up to the Second China War of 1857 to 1860 are listed as are the details of regiments from both the British and Indian armies. Casualty lists of that campaign are given where the majority of deaths were caused by fever rather than by enemy action. The story of the Hong Kong plague of 1894 is told and the military participation is fully described and the list of the known awards of the Hong Kong Plague Medal is given as an Appendix to the chapter dealing with that particular event. At the turn of the century the Boxer rebellion is dealt with as a general subject and also in detail in respect of the various Volunteer units that were involved in the short campaign. A list of the British Officers and NCOs, who were serving with local units and who were awarded the Third China War Medal is provided for the medal researcher, as is the Medal Roll of the 1st Chinese Regiment. The information for this publication has been acquired by the author over a number of years working in archives in the Far East, as well as using material in the National Army Museum, India Office Library, Public Record Office and many other sources. The regimental histories of all the units that have served in China area have been consulted and this book brings together, for the military historian and researcher, this widely dispersed information in one easy-to-use reference work. The book contains a number of useful lists which include details of British and Indian Army units that served in the China station from 1841 to 1941; a list of Commanders of the Hong Kong and China garrison from 1844 to 1985, as well as other minor lists such as the Roll of Commandants of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps which was in existence as a unit for eighty-eight years. The author first served with the British Army in Hong Kong in 1949, and revisited the Colony in 1989, with his wife, to up-date a number of the illustrations used in this book.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
