Matilda flees the brutality of Van Dieman's land to the first settlement on West New Holland at Freemanport, thence to Toodyay where she helps her aboriginal friends escape a massacre to the safety of a brothel back in the Port city. She meets The Swagman, who has just completed his epic trek across the continent from East to West.The antagonist is a terrifying agent of law and order, The Nemesis of Witches, Captain Sharman, shape-changing Officer of British Justice, with a great black carnivorous horse, who uses all his force and power to capture and relentlessly punish any vulnerable prey.
