Description:The ninth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Tegh Bahadur, was born on April 1, 1621, in the Guru Ka Mahal, Amritsar. He was the fifth son of Guru Hargobind and Bibi Nanaki. Guru Hargobind named his son 'Tegh Bahadur' since he foresaw him as his bravest son who can wield sword for the protection of religion. The holy city of Amritsar rejoiced for ten days on the birth of the great soul.He spent most of his childhood time in meditation and rarely went out of the house or played with boys of his age. He loved listening to Shabads even though he could not understand their meaning. When he was five years old, he was sent to a Sikh school where he was taught by Bhai Budha. There he learnt Gurbani along with other subjects, took military training and became a very skilled horseman. The teachings of Guru Nanak influenced him alot and at the age of eight he got baptised, and grew up into a complete human being.According to the customs of those times, he was married to Gujariji at the age of thirteen. At that time Shah Jahan was the Mughal Emperor and had twice been defeated by Guru Hargobind's men. In the third attack of Imperial army, Guru Hargobind granted permission to Guru Tegh Bahadur to fight in the battle. He fought bravely in his first battle and destroyed them. The battle was won and everyone praised his bravery.Guru Hargobind passed away and appointed Guru Har Rai, son of Guru Tegh Bahadur's elder brother, as the next Guru. And Guru Tegh Bahadur spent his time in prayers and meditation for next twenty years, away from political and religious affairs of the world. During this time, Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan was usurped by his son Aurangzeb and Guru Har Krishan, Guru Har Rai's second son became the next Guru. But the eighth Guru died of small pox in 1664. In the absence of true religious leader to guide Sikh Sangat, Guru Tegh Bahadur accepted the responsibility as the next Guru.There were many imposters who claimed Guru's seat. Due to these reasons, the chief priest of closed Golden Temple doors and did not allow him to enter Akal Takht. Then he proceeded to Kiratpur, which became famous as 'Anandpur' and is now a big centre of Sikhism. At the age of forty-five, he was blessed with Guru Gobind Singh, the saviour of humanity. He preached teachings of Guru Nanak all over India, helping the needy. The name of Akal Purakh reverberated from all directions. Since 1668, Aurangzeb was spreading terror and bloodshed in India. Guru Tegh Bahadur exhorted people to worship one God and fear no-one. He tried to settle dispute by negotiations rather than by war. But Aurangzeb kept on oppressing people and moreover, forced devout Hindus to become Muslims. So, Guruji stepped in and said to Aurangzeb that all Brahmins will embrace Islam only if he could covert their Guru. He also said that he would sacrifice his life for the cause of Dharma but never be converted. On saying this, Guruji was arrested and was brought to Delhi as prisoner in 1675, where he sacrificed his life for the freedom of his people. He said to Mughal Emperor that a faith which did not tolerate other faiths is no faith, refused conversion to Islam and the order of execution was passed.
