Description:Among the sixty-three nayanmars (ardent devotees) of Lord Siva, Sambandar, Appar and Sundarar are the most prominent ones. They lived in the 7th century AD during the times when Saivism was not at its best. In their effort to rekindle Saivism and to enable people to get the grace of the Lord, they composed hymns on the Siva temples they visited. These hymns with its subtle meaning praise the supreme grandeur of Lord Siva and instils a sense of devotion to anyone who reads or listens to them. This collection of hymns in Tamil language is called Thevaram which forms the first seven volumes out of twelve canonical works of Saivism. Thevaram literally means ‘a garland of songs’ in Tamil language. There are 276 Siva temples in total which have the privilege of sung by one of the three great saints. They are referred to as Paadal Petra Sthalam.The original manuscript of Thevaram in the form of palm leaves was hidden in an archive in Chidambaram temple. Rajaraja chola, one of the legendary kings of Chola dynasty and saint poet Nambiandar Nambi retrieved the manuscripts from Chidambaram and restored them in the form that is currently available.All these temples are at least 1200 years old; some are even older than that and dates back to prehistorical period. These temples have been patronized by multiple dynasties of kings – Cholas, Pandyas and Pallavas. Cholas played a key role, especially Aditya Chola had renovated 108 temples in Tamil Nadu.
