Description:From the late 1930s until his death in January 1964, Datu Bandar Abang Hj. Mustapha was one of the best-known figures in Sarawak. With an outstanding career in the Police and Native Affairs, ‘Abang Hj. Mus’ commanded genuine respect amongst Sarawak’s different communities. Spanning the period of the ‘White Rajahs’, the Japanese occupation, British colonial rule and Malaysia, his life reflected the series of dramatic changes which brought isolated and underdeveloped Sarawak into the modern world. Although his social background might well have made him a conservative, his thinking was liberal and progressive. Supporting the last Rajah’s cession of Sarawak to Britain in 1946, he endured bitter criticism. Similarly, his strong stand in support of Tunku Abdul Rahman’s Malaysia proposal in 1961 brought accusations of ‘selling’ Sarawak. In each case, he was taking the long view. As the founder of Parti Negara Sarawak (PANAS) in 1960, he was the first leader to press for native unity and to forge links with the government of newly-independent Malaya. Untiring in his efforts to build his part and to promote Malaysia, he exhausted his health and his financial resources in the process.
