Description:When I was diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia, it felt as though a lightening bolt had struck me. It shattered my world. I was put into a mental asylum. My friends fell away. Was this to be a life sentence? Was there a way to escape from the straitjacket of serious mental illness? This is my story, the story of how I learned to survive and reach a state of happiness.Born in Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, I finished school in South Africa. I attended the University of the Witwatersrand, in South Africa, where I studied Dentistry. I did well, I soon owned my own practice, before being struck down by a debilitating mental illness. My fortunes were reversed. I spent years struggling before owning my own dental practice once again.Despite the Apartheid laws, I fell in love with a woman from a different racial background. Eventually we married. Our circumstances changed, I suffered a number of mental health relapses, often culminating in us losing almost everything and having to split our family so the children could live with relatives while my wife and I became effectively homeless, surviving with the help and kindness of our friends. Scammers took advantage of my vulnerability, resulting in years of poverty. Due to the sanctions imposed upon the country as a result of its Apartheid policies, the economy spiralled downwards, and no close relatives were able to help me.An uncle became aware of our plight and enabled me to emigrate to the UK to find work. This drastically changed my life. My wife was later able to join me. We even bought a house. It was in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. Prospects were looking good.Once again circumstances intervened, forcing me out of the prosperity I had found. I searched for work throughout the country and had to settle far from our new home. After moving a few times a boss and the dental authorities forced me into retirement. I left my profession. Mental health problems prevailed. My wife became affected by mental illness too. We struggled. Our marriage suffered. She returned to live in South Africa.Music helped me over this stressful time. I visited my local university and met many students studying at Southampton University, some of whom became good friends. They helped me regain my lost confidence and self-esteem. I met members of staff and people who attended the regular lunchtime concerts, as well as the performers. I started studying the clarinet from scratch, enjoying every moment. I found a great private teacher who kept me focused on my goal of aiming to become a student at the university.Reversals came my way again. I suffered financial setbacks and had to put my study goals on hold.My life remained a series of ups and downs. Fortune followed by misfortune.I gained a degree of wisdom from the example set by those family members held dear, as well as from experience, based on living life the hard way. I have found happiness in the challenges that life places in front of me from day to day, everyday being different from the last. Now, 40 years after my initial diagnosis, I spend my time writing, reading, studying, and practicing music, and helping my friends wherever possible. This give me great satisfaction. My life has turned around. I have found profound happiness. I have found a balance. My mental illness is in remission, with the help of the psychotropic medication I take, I am stable, and my illness is under control. I have written this open account of my life with the purpose of giving hope to those, who may be suffering as I have.I wish to give hope of a better way out of their, apparently, hopeless situation.
