Description:Originally, I thought we could just chronologically order this big pile of art notes from a seventy-five-year life, call it an autobiography, and be done with it: Bob’s Big Book of Words. For the past couple of years I’ve been trying to do just that, and it has just about wiped me out—rung the old poet bloodless in the process of printing up his poems. The problem is not with the art. The poems and essays can stand on their own. These dabbles of the absolute, these whim and soul-charged instances of dire and ecstatic expression, these instances of my essence require no more context than the reach of their own ink upon the page. But the story I tell requires the full context from which emerge these full-force, art-aspiring glimpses of eternity. It is all the breaths, all the roads, all the laughter, song, and tears, all the magic and boredom of a life fully lived that make up this poet’s journey. My writing has never intended to be a recording of my life. I like to tell my stories and to capture, with all the practiced intensity of my craft, moments, ideas, experiences for the sake of leaping the gap between my existence and the rest of you. Sharing. Knowing together what is at once the core of our individuality and our universal connectedness. Art, you know. But to give an honest shot at this, my life requires a narrative to accompany the sparks and clarity of the flashes of heart and truth existent in the dots of written words that form the dot-to-dot tale that is my life’s story thus far. Part of the problem is that art tends to labor on in the darker realms, sometimes totally ignoring coexistent regions of giddy good times and just everyday wonder. The poems alone would be a distortion of my times. It is critical to the purpose of my art that I give credence to a sense of life that is livable in its balance. Take these utterances of mine, these expressions of heart and mind that make up the portfolio of my being and let them speak their truths to you.
