Description:An inspiring advocacy story written and illustrated by students around the world, dedicated to Syrian children and their families.“Meet Aidan and Tariq, two young soccer enthusiasts, growing up on opposite sides of the world. One fall, Tariq and his family attempt to escape the civil war in Aleppo, Syria, and television images of children fleeing the violence deeply trouble Aidan. While Tariq’s family makes the brave and difficult journey to Amman, Jordan, Aidan considers how he and his classmates might respond. As Tariq dreams of playing soccer and reuniting with his family, Aidan initiates a meaningful journey of friendship, bridging the distance between them.”Dear Tariq is recommended for readers ages 8/9-12, in third grade and up though anyone who champions student creativity can appreciate this story. This special advocacy narrative is a multiage creative international storytelling endeavor, spanning two years in the making. Co-authors Selena Morse and Geo Chen were inspired to write this story in their junior year of high school, upon meeting young humanitarian and refugee advocate, Alex Myteberi. With the support of Jordan Hattar of Help4Refugees, Sirin Hamada, a native of Syria joined the Dear Tariq team and began illustrating the project at just ten years old!Sirin, in collaboration with Allison Dai, a then junior in high school, began creating over 40 illustrations that now appear in the book. Shahd Abu Gharbieh, an Arabic student translator, helped to facilitate Dear Tariq’s communication over the last two years, ensuring the team could effectively communicate with one another! Both the redemptive storyline and creative process behind the scenes are indicative of these students’ resilience, determination, and desire to create a positive impact. The back of the book includes student discussion questions, personalized letters from the Dear Tariq team and Alex Myteberi, young adult advocacy resources, as well as ways to turn compassion into action!*Proceeds of Dear Tariq go to young illustrator Sirin Hamada and other Syrian refugee families living in Amman, Jordan. The Dear Tariq Creative Team encourages educators and parents to be active co-participants in facilitating and supporting thoughtful discussions around sensitive themes of war referenced in our narrative. Within the story, sentence fluency and vocabulary range from simple to more complex. Arabic words that appear in the text are defined at the bottom of the page."I was amazed by Dear Tariq! This highly engaging, relevant book tells the story of two boys from different parts of the world with very different lives, who connect and lift each other up. This is a story of struggle and sadness, but also of hope. I highly recommend this inspiring book for any young person, parent, and teacher who wants to find out how to make a difference in the lives of others."-Stacy C.
