Excerpt: Franz Stangl (March 26, 1908 June 28, 1971) was a commandant of the Sobibor and Treblinka extermination camps in the rank of SS-Obersturmfuhrer. The son of a nightwatchman, Stangl was born in Altmunster, Austria. His relationship with his natural father was not a good one; he was so deeply frightened by him that he developed a hatred for his dragoon uniform. Stangl claimed his father died of malnutrition in 1916. To help support his family Stangl learned to play the zither and earned money giving zither lessons. In his teens he secured an apprenticeship as a weaver, qualfiying as a master weaver by the age of 23. Concerned that this trade offered few opportunities for advancement - and having observed the poor health of his co-workers - Stangl sought a new career. He was accepted into the Austrian police force, suggesting later that he liked the security and cleanliness that the uniforms represented to him. He became a member of the illegal NSDAP in 1931. Stangl later denied that he had been a Nazi in 1931, suggesting that he had only been listed as a member of the party as a way to avoid arrest after the Germans had seized power in the Anschluss in 1938. Records suggest that Stangl contributed to a Nazi aid fund at the time; but he said that he was misled as to the purpose of the fund. Stangl rose up the ranks of the German/Austrian police force, promotion which brought pressure on him to renounce his faith in the Catholic Church.
