His twin brother, Manfred Guttmacher, was an infamous medical advisor to the Supreme Court as a psychiatrist. Their younger sister, Dorothy Emma Guttmacher, owned the Tudor Flower Shops at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Alan married Leonore Gidding in 1926 and together they raised three daughters, Ann (Loeb), Sally (Holtzman), and Susan (Green). For a period of time, the family lived at 1833 Linden Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland. Their father, Rabbi Adolf (Adolph) Guttmacher (d. 1915), was a Rabbi at the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation. He was transferred to Baltimore from Ft. Wayne, Indiana, where he served as the last German speaking Rabbi at Congregation Achduth Vesholom from 1889 until 1891.
