Excerpt: Jim Sweeney (born September 1, 1929) is a former college football coach from Butte, Montana most noted for his success as a head coach at Fresno State. Sweeney is the father of Kevin Sweeney, whom he coached while at Fresno State. Jim Sweeney graduated from the University of Portland in 1951. From 1963-67, he was the head coach at Montana State in Bozeman. Sweeney compiled a 31-20 (.608) record and three conference championships in his five seasons with the Bobcats, where one of his starting quarterbacks was Dennis Erickson. At Montana State, Sweeney is credited with convincing Jan Stenerud, there on a skiing scholarship, to go out for the football team as a kicker. Stenerud went on to become the only "pure" kicker inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. From 1968-75, he coached at Washington State in Pullman, where he compiled a 26-59-1 (.308) record in eight seasons. After a disappointing conclusion to the 1975 season, Sweeney resigned and was promptly hired at Fresno State, where he compiled a 143-75-3 (.654) record and eight conference championships in 19 seasons. He retired from coaching following the 1996 season with 200 wins in 32 seasons.
