The Northeast Railroad Scene, Vol. 5: The Jersey Central, A brief look before Conrail

Bob Pennisi
4.9/5 (21274 ratings)
Description:Volume 5: Central of New JerseyThe fifth volume in a six part series of softcover books, Bob Pennisi presents through the use of b&w photos (color images appear only on the front and back cover) the various major component railroads that were eventually merged to form Conrail on April 1, 1976.The Central of New Jersey was primarily a heavy commuter oriented railroad. Suffering from a lack of long-haul mileage from its freight operations, which would have provided more revenue generation, the CNJ was in and out of bankruptcy throughout much of its history before disappearing into the Conrail system.CNJ rostered a wide variety of diesel locomotives from most of the builders. There were the `baby face' and (somewhat) unusual double-ended units from Baldwin; Fairbanks-Morse H24-66 Train Masters and their smaller H15 and H16-44 baby brothers; Alco switchers and roadswitchers; along with EMD SWs, GP7s, GP9s, SD35s, and for commuter service, thirteen GP40Ps. Budd RDCs also carried commuters and were found operating over various branch lines. Images of all these are found in the book.CNJ was most definitely a road with character! Never one to have much cash on hand, it made do with what equipment it could. The book also includes a few examples of steam fan trips run over Jersey Central lines.Table of ContentsIntroduction ........................................ 4Pennsylvania Division ........................... 5West Jersey & The High Bridge Branch ...... 18Raritan East - Land of Commuters ............ 38The Shore & South Jersey ....................... 48Stations, Equipment, etc. ........................ 58Acknowledgements ..............................64A sometimes forgotten component of Conrail's system, this volume visually presents CNJ's lines as they were before most were abandoned for good.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
