The Northeast Railroad Scene, Vol. 6: The Penn Central, A brief look before Conrail

Bob Pennisi
4.9/5 (33861 ratings)
Description:Volume 6: Penn CentralThe sixth and final volume in a six part series of softcover books, Bob Pennisi presents through the use of b&w photos (color images appear only on the front and back cover) the various major component railroads that eventually merged to form Conrail on April 1, 1976.The Penn Central was formed on February 1, 1968 through the merging of the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) and New York Central (NYC). On December 31st of that year, PC was forced to also absorb the (seemingly) perennially bankrupt New Haven railroad. Ultimately the corporate infighting between the PRR and NYC management teams, inability to fully realize proposed merger benefits from streamlined operations, plus having been forced to pay too much for the New Haven, helped force PC to itself declare bankruptcy in June 1970. At the time it was the largest corporation to do so in U.S. history. The book begins by featuring look-back chapters on each of the pre-merger roads: Pennsy, NYC, and the New Haven. Featured are some classic images including steam, electric, MUs, plus early diesels. This is followed by a look at the PC from various parts of its vast system, then a look at early Amtrak operations.Table of ContentsIntroduction ................... 4The Pennsy ................... 5The Central ................... 16The New Haven .............. 26Enter Penn Central .......... 32The Amtrak Era .............. 66Acknowledgements .........72While PC lasted only eight years, it was the largest component of the various bankrupt railroads which eventually formed Conrail. Viewed with disdain by some fans after its formation, we're indeed fortunate to those who continued going trackside to capture images during the Penn Central era.Another reviewer mentioned it would have been nice having more color in this book. Please consider that when it was published in 1985, most railroad books, even the popular railfan magazines, were still mostly in b&w. Since then more color photos have appeared in recent Penn Central books from Morning Sun Books and other publishers. The images found in `Northeast Railroad Scene, Vol. 6: Penn Central' are most welcome. A good book, recommended for the PC fan and modeler! We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
