Not illustrated. 1904 Excerpt: ...some time prior to 1750, was the father of Capt. John and Samuel Norwood, and the great-great-grandfather of Joseph Norwood (son of James Hart Norwood). The Norwood family emigrated to the United States from England in 1648 and made their first settlement in Virginia. John and Alexander McIntosh, brothers, came to America in 1746, just after the battle of Culloden, in which battle Colonel and Ensign McIntosh were slain, and the wife of Laird McIntosh was taken in custody by the English. Alexander became a general in the Revolutionary war. John became wealthy and died in 1787. Both settled in the old Cheraw district of South Carolina. John McIntosh the second was born at Society Hill, S. C., in 1762, and served in the latter part of the Revolution. He was wounded in a skirmish with Tories near Black Creek in Darlington district. He married Sarah Edwards, and their daughter, Sarah McIntosh, was the wife of Joseph Norwood, Sr., and grandmother of the subject of this sketch. Joseph Norwood, Jr., was educated in the common schools and in Captain Patrick's high school for boys at Greenville, S. C., to the year 1872; he attended Alabama Polytechnic institute, leaving in 1873 without graduating. He took a diploma from Eastman's Business college at Poughkeepsie, N. Y., in 1878. He began business at Fort Deposit, Ala., in 1881, and has been a merchant and planter at the place ever since. From 1878 to1881 he was in the employ of the railway company. He was mayor of Fort Deposit from 1883 to 1885; was a delegate to the Alabama State Constitutional convention in 1901, and a member of the Alabama State senate in 1903, representing Lowndes county in both instances.
