The author regrets the incompleteness that must necessarily attach to a compilation so brief. His knowledge of human nature convinces him that the discussion of a few men and a few incidents with more than passing mention will create a more abiding interest and subserve a higher purpose than will a hasty treatise of many men and many circumstances. He has therefore attempted to make distinct the life and character of the master spirits whom he has selected to represent the leaders in historic tendencies.
